MASTOPEXY

What is the mastopexy procedure?

Mastopexy or breast lift is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of your breasts, addressing a drop in the breast, sagging skin or low nipple position. Your breast shape can change because of several reasons: pregnancy, weight fluctuations or simply gravity.

How is mastopexy performed?

If you need such a procedure, Dr. Buzea can reshape your mammary gland improving the upper pole fullness, remove the skin excess and reposition the nipple.

The location of the incisions and the final scars, the sensitivity of the nipple as well as the ability to breastfeed after surgery depends not only on the surgical technique but also on the shape of your breasts.

When is mastopexy recommended?

There are a lot of factors that lead to changes in breast shape:

  • pregnancy. During pregnancy your breasts enlarge, become heavier stretching the internal ligaments resulting ultimately in sagging, whether you are breastfeeding or not.

  • gravity. Breast ligaments can stretch over time and lose their elasticity.

  • weight fluctuations. Sudden weight loss or gain can also lead to sagging breasts as a result of forced stretch and loss of elasticity.

What happens after the surgery?

After the surgery, you will wear a post-surgical bra and surgical tapes. It may also be necessary to have some small drainage tubes in order to drain the excess fluids.

Your breast may be swollen and the swelling might persist for two weeks. In the first 5-7 postoperative days, it is advisable to avoid putting pressure on the breast. In two weeks’ time, the stiches will be removed.

Although your breast maybe sagging at the moment, you may not be a good candidate for a breast lift. For example, if you are planning to have a baby in the near future, it would be advisable to postpone this procedure.

The final result is not the same for every patient and this issue will be discussed during the consultation with Dr. Buzea. Even though mastopexy can be performed in breasts of any size, women with smaller breasts tend to maintain results longer than women with heavier breasts, with a greater predisposition to stretch the ligaments.

Since most of the details about the surgery (what it means, how to prepare for the operation, what type of anesthesia will be used, what the recovery implies etc.) must be discussed face to face, doctor Buzea can offer you a personalized consultation. This way, you can have a better understanding of both the risks and benefits of such an intervention, taking into account your wishes as well as your unique anatomical characteristics.
